That's something I will have to deal with also. I want to turn the fireplace around in this house and have it face into what is now the garage.

Not sure about the code on that, might be able to use vented double walled steel for the chimney.

Might not have to be actual masonry but a chimney is not optional.

Well, for a real wood burning fireplace you need a masonry chimney, not just a PVC exhaust pipe like high efficiency gas burners.

Other than it supposed to be vented I'm not sure what else needs to be done to keep it wood burning
