Default Exhaust Life with a TL (lots o pics).

From the factory the TL sounds dull. Yes, the big twin which had so many times caught my eye and made me drool with envy for a few years sounded so lack luster that it was almost embarrassing.

So the like any TL owner with a budget a set of bolt on cans were picked up (second hand).

Those cans were on for awhile but I, like any other rider, wanted more. A buddy of mine was selling his TLS and put his full system up for sale (Yosh highmount with carbon fiber cans), so I gathered some funds and picked it up from him.

Less than a month later a track incident left this system a little buggered.

For the rebuild I decided to be a little creative. I knew a TLPlanet member who had a Yosh rear section for a TLR customized from a 2-2 to a 2-1. I knew he wasn’t using anymore so I put out a feeler to see if he was interested in letting it go. I contacted Yoshimura for a new mid pipe and things were starting to come together. Now, when I did this I had no idea if a Yosh TLR rear section header would match to the Yosh TLS front section but I was willing to give it a shot. Normal TLR and TLS Yosh pipes are very different in design to compensate for clearances and mounting points (as are the factory pipes).

You can see in the pic above that, since the right side pipe was destroyed, I used the left side pipe in its place (Yosh tag on inside). You can also see that the condition of the pipes was looking a little ‘old’. In order to refresh them I broke out the wire wheel and a buffing pad.

The last thing on my list of ‘to-do’s’ was to update the can. I knew from my research that Yosh used the same inlet diameter on the majority of their cans. I found an unused TRS pipe for a 01-03 GSXR1k that was being let go for a cheap so I decided to pic it up. It slipped right on with only the need to fabricate an exhaust hanger, but that only took 10 minutes (including the polishing).

I’m now quite happy with the system… Until someone complements me on the work I’ve done to my SV650. :uh:
