Exhaust Life with a TL (lots o pics).
From the factory the TL sounds dull. Yes, the big twin which had so many times caught my eye and made me drool with envy for a few years sounded so lack luster that it was almost embarrassing.
So the like any TL owner with a budget a set of bolt on cans were picked up (second hand). http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/TLS27.jpg Those cans were on for awhile but I, like any other rider, wanted more. A buddy of mine was selling his TLS and put his full system up for sale (Yosh highmount with carbon fiber cans), so I gathered some funds and picked it up from him. http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/T...04/TLYosh6.jpg Less than a month later a track incident left this system a little buggered. http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/Track4/HS1.jpg For the rebuild I decided to be a little creative. I knew a TLPlanet member who had a Yosh rear section for a TLR customized from a 2-2 to a 2-1. I knew he wasn’t using anymore so I put out a feeler to see if he was interested in letting it go. I contacted Yoshimura for a new mid pipe and things were starting to come together. Now, when I did this I had no idea if a Yosh TLR rear section header would match to the Yosh TLS front section but I was willing to give it a shot. Normal TLR and TLS Yosh pipes are very different in design to compensate for clearances and mounting points (as are the factory pipes). http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/T...eb05/Pic10.jpg You can see in the pic above that, since the right side pipe was destroyed, I used the left side pipe in its place (Yosh tag on inside). You can also see that the condition of the pipes was looking a little ‘old’. In order to refresh them I broke out the wire wheel and a buffing pad. http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/T.../TLSRearP1.jpg The last thing on my list of ‘to-do’s’ was to update the can. I knew from my research that Yosh used the same inlet diameter on the majority of their cans. I found an unused TRS pipe for a 01-03 GSXR1k that was being let go for a cheap so I decided to pic it up. It slipped right on with only the need to fabricate an exhaust hanger, but that only took 10 minutes (including the polishing). http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/02Aug05/TRS3.jpg I’m now quite happy with the system… Until someone complements me on the work I’ve done to my SV650. :uh: |
Thats some great work....now you should help me with my pipe :)

I'd have to know what the track day tech inspectors
have to say about it first - But it looks great. |

I thought the entire piece was custom, not just the lexan, but if you replaced just the plastic, why is it so expensive? I was looking around the web for similar items, but only found them for a Banshee quad. |

http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/TLS28.jpg Yoshimura made a cast aluminum replacement... http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/02Feb05/Pic5.jpg This one is billit with a Lexan insert... http://www.mariposaderojo.com/Pics/TLS/03May05/CC1.jpg Machining a billit cover for a bike that is no longer in production tends to drive up the price. That and the cost for getting them from the German manufacturer. |

Any noticable differences in performance between the 2-into-2 & 2-into-1?
|
When I had the initial full system I noticed a slight responsive difference from the bolt on cans. But when I went to the 2-1 I also did a lot of other mods (sprockets, remap, modified airbox) at the same time so determining if the exhaust system hurt performance was impossible to tell due to the other variables.
I do feel that since the 2-1 is a home made job that it will indeed not offer the gains of a 2-2 full system but it would perform better then the stock 2-2. I am still fabricating some parts for the new 2-2 (hangers) so I do not have a comparison yet between the 2-1 and latest 2-2 set-ups. BTW... The 2-1 will be going on my track TLR. |
nice work man, but im partial to twin cans
