Is my motorcycle required to be inspected?
Effective August 1, 2010, motorcycles are no longer required to submit for an inspection in the
State of New Jersey. Riders should keep in mind that it is their responsibility to ensure that their
motorcycles are free from mechanical defects and are operating properly.
How do I self-inspect my motorcycle?
Here are some points that every rider should remember before they hit the road. They should be
mindful to have the current motorcycle registration, insurance card and driver license with them
whenever they ride. Of course, they must always ride with the correct protective equipment
which includes the following:
 USDOT approved non-reflective helmet with four inches of reflective tape on each side
 Approved goggles or face shield if motorcycle is not equipped with an approved wind
screen
Finally, it is important that the motorcycle be examined to ensure that every component is
working in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and is not bent, loose, damaged,
broken, defective or out of alignment. These components are as follow:
 Steering, suspension, and wheel alignment
 Handlebar grips that are not higher than your shoulders when you are seated on the
motorcycle in normal driving position
 Horn
 Red rear light and reflector
 Stop light
 Head light
 Rear view mirror
 Exhaust system
 Tires
 Seat, hand holds, and foot rests
 Adequate brakes (all motorcycles made after 1974 require brakes on front and rear
wheels)
It is important for all riders to remember that any vehicle, including motorcycles, may be cited
by law enforcement at any time for mechanical defects or when equipment is out of compliance.

This law has no affect on me because I live in PA. I have never had one of my bikes inspected except for the first new bike that I bought back in '99

Wow, I had no idea... Registration fees get jacked up, and they cut back on the inspections.... Fair enough trade... Thanks for the heads up, although I wasnt due for another 2 years.

Good to know my bike will have the same thorough inspection now as it did a year ago when I paid a gas station for the sticker and they didn't even look out the window before giving it to me.

Well worth the money anyway, with all the click it or ticket checkpoints in NJ sometimes they use it an excuse to check bike registration and inspection stickers.

and this will give them more reason to be picky.....Great.

The inspections cost the state (taxpayers) money to perform. Now the police will enforce violations to generate revenue paid for by taxpayers. The difference is now instead of just needing to repair that broken taillight you'll have a ~$50 ticket to go along with that $1 bulb from Napa.

This is a win win for the state and lose lose for tax payers. Taxes will not go down to reflect the savings. They say the inspection on your car cost around $45 bucks which is performed every 2 years on a used car. You will not get your $22.50 annually back from the government. Kiss it good bye.

The $5 surcharge on M/C licenses is still on there as well. It was meant (and used to actually be used) to reduce the cost of MSF classes to EVERYONE that took the class in NJ. Then the state decided to use that $ to give the class away (illegally I might add). Now they aren't offering the class AND no one is taking the class at a discount...........

How do you like the "accelerated registration program" where you pay for 4 years registration up front.

If you wreck the car or sell it you can't get a refund, especially on a lease. BS!

They are having you pay 4 years ahead to meet their financial obligations today. Where do you go from here?
