yeah, thats what it looks llike. I like just before the plane actually breaks the sound barrier, you can see an "orb" around it, almost like its in one of those plasma globes, it moves across the sky flickering. It almost looks unreal!

I think it has something to do with the water vapor in the air getting compressed

Yeah I spent 4 years on an aircraft carrier, got to see it first hand many times. The crazy thing is you see it happen before you hear the expolsion then you feel it. I was in arresting gear (catching them) so I got to see a lot of cool stuff out there.
