If you really want to learn wheelies get yourself something like an XR100 or 200 and find a grass field. And take off the back fender since it'll snap off the first time you loop out. Get comfortable using the rear brake to balance the front end from looping out.
Sitdowns are easiest on a streetbike, stand up on a dirtbike in my opinion. Just remember to lean forward into the tank when you SLIP the clutch and pull it up. If you dump it and lean back you will be parting out whats left of your bike.
Please wear your safety gear and pick some place safe to practice.

I used to do sitdowns forever, then about 3 years ago I started doing standups until I broke the footpegs off of my 2002 R1. Then I stopped doing them, until about 1 year ago. Sitdowns are the easiest to get used to getting the front wheel off of the ground. For me, I get more control out of standups. If you really want to work on this, find a friend with a video camera and have him film you as you try to wheelie. The hardest part is the relationship between how far the wheel is off the ground and how far you think the wheel is off of the ground. Narrow that gap and you're on your way...
Besides, if you screw up and flip it... you will at least have some nice crash footage...
