If you want to be able to ride it on the street your best bet is KTM.

If you're gonna get a dirtbike just pick up a 125 or 250 two-stroke, it's cheaper and less of a hastle regarding having to register and insure. You might also have a problem finding a dual sport that's light enough to flick around on the trails for the most part, and pavement eats up dirt tires quick. Also be prepared to perform a lot more maintenance regarding pulling the bike apart for cleaning, it's not like a streetbike where you can just ride it and leave it, if you want it to stay in great shape and perfect running order you'll have to stay ontop of that. If you're gonna go dirt then stick to the dirt, that's where the fun is, save the road for the streetbike.

since it'd be my second bike, i thought it'd be nice to have for quick rides to the grocery store or other quick errands. i actually thought there would be LESS maintenance thinking that it was a simpler machine. but, i don't mind the maintenace part at all, it's not that big of a deal.
