Thinking about doing the track exclusively but its not feasable yet since I don't have a dedicated car/truck. The track would probably be cheaper in the long run since I won't have to insure my bike. As it is, I don't have a chance to ride as much as I want and track days here and there would probably give me my fix during the riding season.

I have a nice Honda 919 that I putt around on the street with. I would really love an FJR1300 for the street.

I agree with a lot of what has been said.... Track and street riding are very different, and I usually dont confuse the two. Ride within your own limits, and that of your surroundings, and leave the rest to chance. We take risks every day and if I had to worry about what could happen then I'd lock myself in a room and never come out.

I rarely ride aggressively on the street, and I have been looking to get a cruiser lately which would be more practical for most of the riding I do on the steet. I have 13k miles on my bike since I picked it up last July and I would be surprised if I did more than 1000 miles of twisties on it since then.

On most days I would rather ride than drive, so I doubt I will be giving up street riding anytime soon.

Ride both, if you are just doing track only for some reason, you probably had something go wrong in your life somewhere to make you convince yourself to go track only. Yes, riding modern sportbikes on the street is muting what their capabilities are but hell, mot of you can't ride to your trackbikes capabilities on the track.

They are TWO DIFFERENT THINGS, treat them as such.

While I wish track time was not so expensive, Its good to do both. I have ridden on the street for many years and don't think I will give it up.. Street and track (which I have recently learned) are miles apart and each requires their own set of rules and respect to be fun and safe. I will say that if cost were not an issue I would do more track days as I have not done very many and there is much to learn there.

Having 2 bikes certainly does not hurt either..

Doing my first TD Monday has really humbled my street riding..

It's fun and all, I still like it.. But the track is the track!

Good thread. I agree with Jim. The two are very different beasts. It's strange... I looked forward to weekend rides up around Sussex so much more before I went on my first trackday with my R6 this year. It changed how I feel about riding on the street (which I didn't expect at all) - I still enjoy street riding, but it's a different animal now. Now I feel like it's just more of a chance to unwind and putz around see some nice countryside, enjoy a few corners, but mostly I'm taking it very cautiously and taking very few risks. It's like the "sport" part is missing from the road riding after doing the track day. The track however is an amazing sport, probably the most fun sport I've ever played - I'd do it waaaaay more if I had the time and trailer and such... but as Jim says... expensive. Oh yeah... a second bike... that would be great.

I bought a track only bikes 5 years ago and rode on the street once since then. Granted mine is for financial reasons and I can only afford one bike right now. When and if the money comes around again I'd opt for a motard style bike or a standard style bike. A bike with a higher fun factor then speed.

I do miss the street rides but doing about 30 track days per year I get my fill.

I'm not sure I agree with the money factor of why you can't have two bikes. There are tons of cool, affordable street rides out there. You could sell the expensive bike and buy two lesser ones, one for track and one for street or you could copy what I did. Mine was a little extreme but I rebuilt a 1979 Kawasaki KZ650 ... probably have about $500 into it. Its a great bike, starts reliably all the time, will cruise easily up to 100, handles great ect. I use that to get around and get my street riding thrills. My R1 is track only and will stay that way. I may buy another nice streetbike sometime down the line but for now, I have peanuts into both of my bikes so it doesn't make sense to change when I am saving up for some many other things.

I chose the track over the street because it's more fun and I get to use more of the bike's performance potential there than I could ever try on the street. I'm not implying that I've tried to use the street as my own personal racetrack. In fact, after my 2nd trackday ever, I really slowed my street riding waaaay down to the posted speed limits. Shortly after that I decided to sell my streetbike and build a dedicated track bike becuase it wasn't worth paying the high insurance premiums just to own a fast streetbike.

The other reason I do track only is that the wife told me I had to choose one style of riding; track or street.

streets can be fun, really depends on what streets people have available to them.
