Sure. Home Depot wants to be able to sell it for less than a plumbing supply store. American Standard says the only way we can do it is with lower quality. Home Depot says that's up to you since the vendor pays for the returns.

Fact is it's a different product. HD and Lowes are so big that lots of manufacturers will make products just for those stores. The model# will reflect what store it was made for. Powertools, plumbing fixures, floor products, lawn tractors, mowers, ect. The list goes on.

The model #'s are changed to prevent comparison shopping.

Yes and no... With many items this is the case.

FOr the particular item I was having a problem with, it wasnt a Lowes exclusive. However for those kinds of items they may have a rating system when going through QA and the lower end stuff goes to Lowes. I have also seen how they handle some of the items which may have been why they were damaged... Boxes also have the THIS END UP arrow for a reason, so when I see items placed on the wrong side, it makes me wonder...

The good thing is they have a excellent return policy and I dont mind returning things until I get one that doesnt suck...
