Installing a new chain.. - Sportbike Addicts

Okay...

I did this on my other track bike but for the life of me I cannot remember how I did it.

Do I have the rear wheel as far back, or 1/2 way before I measure and cut links off.? I'm putting on a 520 D.I.D ERV3 chain

I usually go more towards the front, not the rear. if you go all the way back, you wont have any adjustment left once it is installed.

The chain that's on there now is already a D.I.D ERV3 chain, the other owner went -2F and +4 rear so it will be sorta kinda difficult to try that

Waaaa, just cut it.. you can always put two rivet links on.

!/2 or more towards the front. If you are doing stock gearing, cut it to stock length. If you are doing a

or -1 then do it the way I said. If you go past the 1/2 way mark the other direction, you will prematurely run out of adjustment, then you'll need to get another masterlink and cut the chain again.

If he measures with the wheel towards the front and screws up by cutting off too many links, he is SOL unless he wants to put on two links... He he measures from the back the worst that could happen is he doesnt take enough links off..

I would stick with having the wheel 1/2 to all the way back... And yes, if he is going to stock gearing, or close to is -1/

, stock length should work.

Listen, if you lay both ends of the chain on the rear sprocket, you can adjust it as you would normally. If you get the right slack with the axle in an acceptable area on the swingarm, you simply mark the chain, cut it and rivet it back together. No need to blindly cut and hope. Also remember, you can change the handling of your bike by moving the axle in its adjustment range. Forward makes it turn easier, rearward makes it more stable.

Dont forget if you push the rear wheel too far forward it will hit the swingarm when you have to change the tire. Making it hard to remove the chain. The tire could also hit the swingarm when it grows while your riding.
