Default chain replacement

Hey everyone...just a couple quick questions...I'm replacing my chain and sprockets on my bike and just wondering if this is something I should just let Ron do or can I do it myself and save a few bucks. Anyone have experience with replacing this stuff?

Thanks

It's doable, but it's one of the things I leave for the dealer, as you'd need a chain breaker, and then the tool to rivet the master link, unless you're going to use a clip link. I prefer the riveted ones over the clip. Changing the sprockets is easy, but I think the chain needs some tools you may not have.

You can get the tool necessary for about $70. It's not too hard to do yourself.

Yep, spend the $ on the tools once, it will pay for itself the second time you change a chain. 100% use a rivet type master link.

What kind you going with? Doing the 520 conversion? For sprockets I suggest Afam.

Afam sprockets are the shit! I recently cleaned everything up on the track bike, the sprockets looked brand new. Did the 520 conversion 3 years ago and the teeth still have their perfect squared off edges. DID ERV2 and Afam sprockets are the way to go

I'm sure you're more than capable of doing that yourself, you already have the race stand so all you nead is the chain breaker/rivet tool. I'm not sure if there are certain specs for torque on the sprocket bolts though. Like the other guys said, do not use the clip link, it's too risky. After you get the chain on warm it up with a 5 minute ride then hit it with the race lube before hitting the track.

Good. Now i can finally get him down here to help with my rims.

But i have a question on the change. Because mack is going 2 up in the rear, is he going to have to change the chain? I mean would his chain still be good or does it have to be replaced?

Good question. He said he was going with a 14 tooth front. Is that smaller than stock for his bike? Most likely it is, in which case it should ballance out.

I think he told me he was just changing the rear sprocket. But we'll just have to wait until he comes back on to find out.

Ahh, just reread, 16t front...thats probly stock. At any rate, always go a lil bigger. Easier to cut off links than to have to scrounge or buy more.
