Default Air Marshal Kills Passenger

If this idiot had to be used as an example then so be it. This shit's no joke and everyone needs to know that deadly force will be put into play to protect our nation.

"A passenger who claimed to have a bomb in a carry-on bag was shot and killed by a federal air marshal Wednesday on a jetway to an American Airlines plane that had arrived in Miami from Colombia, officials said. No bomb was found in the bag, a U.S. official said.

Homeland Security Department spokesman Brian Doyle said the dead man was a 44 year-old U.S. citizen. It was the first time since the Sept. 11 attacks that an air marshal had shot at anyone, he said.

According to a witness, the man frantically ran down the aisle of the Boeing 757 while his wife tried to explain that he was mentally ill and had not taken his medication.

The passenger indicated there was a bomb in his bag and was confronted by air marshals but ran off the aircraft, Doyle said. The marshals went after him and ordered him to get on the ground, but he did not comply and was shot when he apparently reached into the bag, Doyle said.

The shooting occurred shortly after 2 p.m. as the plane was about to take off for Orlando after about two hours on the ground in Miami. "I don't know yet if the passenger had been on the plane and was getting off, or was starting to board the aircraft," airline spokesman Tim Wagner said.

After the shooting, investigators spread passengers' bags on the tarmac and let dogs sniff them for explosives.

A U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the information's sensitivity, said authorities examined the bag and found no explosives."

They need more details before I 100% agree. If he was carrying the bag the whole time, then yeah, shoot the hell out of him. But what I initially pictured was it in the overhead or under the seat, him running away from it down the isle screaming, then like back to seat to try and get the bag. I need a one cheesy reenactments to see the situation...and I hope they make the guy arab, or at least really dark, in it just for fun.

Lotta speculation's gonna happen with this one. Initially, my reaction is "The air marshals did their job."

None of us will know the true story, however.

mentally ill or not, the wife should have known better then to let her unstable husband onto the plane w/o his meds, esp now a days when everyone is on edge with the whole terrorism bullshit. right or wrong, mentally ill or not. the word bomb should have NEVER been used and getting shot was just as much his wifes fault as it was his.

As long as the facts from the media are 100% i would agree with the air marshall. They are highly trained individuals that know what to do with situations like this.

RIP to the man. What a stupid way to die.

I have family in the FAMs so I may be a little bias here...

Judging from the press release if I had been a passenger on the plane I would have expected the marshall to react just as he had.

Again, what I'm getting from this article is confusing. After reading it like 10 times, it would seem that the guy wasn't on the plan when he reached into the bag and got shot. So at that point, the remaining passengers on the plane weren't the ones in danger anymore (i assume the bomb wasn't atomic) and the plane was on the ground so it wasn't in jeopardy of falling out of the sky. They need to give more details about this damn incident. I had my mom call me saying basically "terrorist's threatened to blow up the plane and this passenger on board got a gun on the plane some how and shot him right before he set it off and saved the day."

But I agree with shooting someone if they threaten anything with a bomb any where near an airport, real or fake, so don't get me wrong on that. It's just the crappy report leads to misinformation and exaggerations, which is my new pet peeve after watching http://seconddraft.org/streaming/pallywood.wmv

Dunno about you guys but if someone says he has a bomb on a plane and then reaches into his bag, I expect guns to be fired at him.

I think the air marshall did his job. The wife should have and his meds. I feel for the family but what if there was a bomb?

yup. what the hell do you expect to happen if you threaten a to blow up a bomb in an airport? Everything I've been reading about this guy says what he did was totally out of character for him. You would either have to be totally fucking insane to do that (which I'm doubting he was) or looking to die.

Here's an article I found, which doesnt provide any information on the incident, just a character story

When I worked at Logan Airport in Boston (14 years ago) you didn't even THINK the word bomb. This guy was just plain stoopit for doing that. Period.
