Default motogp turn in style - leg hanging out??

i was watching the catalunya motogp race. there was one particular turn where a few guys would literally hold their leg out off the peg as they approached a turn, then they'd put it back on the peg, knee out and turn as usual.

why do they do that?

Just a guess, but I don't think its intentional. I didn't understand it either until I grabbed a handful of brake on my TZ250. The braking power is such that the bike slows so quickly that the rider sometimes comes forward in the seat hard enough to have a foot slip off the peg.
It happened to me at the end of the straight at summit on my TZ. Super light bike, great brakes...
If there's another reason, I am all ears.

but if u knew that was coming, wouldn't you grip the tank harder? with one leg off the peg to prevent sliding fwd on the seat, your nuts must take a beating! i guess at the motogp level, when i see stuff like that, i assume there must be some positive purpose to it. plus, it looks pretty silly.

Some of the riders put the sole of their boot against the frame of the bike with the outside of the boot on the top of the peg. Perhaps it's for ground clearance, perhaps it's for control. It could be a tactic to confuse a ride behind you, such as 'backing it in' etc.

When I was watching Moto Gp last year one of the the announcers claimed they did to readjust their foot possition for ground clearance.

sure, sounds like a valid reason, but it seems like they hang it out there way longer than what seems necessary to reposition their foot.

Toe on peg for cornering, toe on shifter for gear changes, toe back on peg for cornering.

It's a lot more than just moving there foot around on the pegs. I've seen it a few times as well, the riders actually take there foot off the peg and extend it a bit, almost like a motorcrosser does going into a burm. I always thought it was just a way for them to rest their legs, but they never seem to do it with their right legs.

Cause the gear shifter isn't on the right.

check out this link, skip to 2:42 and watch Stoner, Rossi, and Pedrosa do it in the same turn. Foot no where near a shifter

I've seen that in prior MotoGP races as well and just attributed it to the most comfortable way for them to readjust their inside foot placement. It doesn't seem to inhibit their ability in any way, so just like years ago when racers first started dragging their knees maybe this is something that we'll see more of in the future as well regarding certain techniques from multiple racers.

Bayliss does it too. I dont believe it's to spook the riders behind, they're up to each others game and it would take more than that. Why they do it i have asked myself many times, still no idea.
