Default TL1000R inquiries...

I am taking a look into something being offered my way. Basically, there is a 2000 TL1000R, some modifications, owned by a 50 year old gentleman, custom paint, whatever. He is looking for a 600 for his son as he doesn't want his son riding the TL out of the gate. We are talking about swapping my bike (2000 Honda CBR 600 F4) for his bike (the 2000 Suzuki TL1000R).

I understand the differences between I4 and V-twin, I also understand the difference between 600 and 1000. I'm not shy about getting on it or anything else at this point.

What I AM shy about is whether or not this bike is worth it. I have heard mixed reviews about these bikes from those who LOVE them to those who HATE them. I see a lot of magazines gave them lower marks versus the RC-51 and Duc's of the day, which I really don't care about.

What I want to know is; why should/n't do this trade. Anything to look out for in the TL1000R's? Anything that is known to break easily and spoil a season of riding? etc etc. Pros and cons if you have any to offer.

I raced both the TLS and the TLR and I enjojed the TLS better. The chasis on the TLR was too stiff and it was hard to dial in....but twins are fun to ride!!

If the TLR is stock with no race suspension then I'd say stick with the Honda. The stock suspension sucks for the track.

Ken may have some input on the this bike as well since he has a 2003'

I have had a TLR since 1999, still have the 99 as a parts bike and I run an 03 as my track bike.
They're heavy but very stable. Mine are not road bikes, but if you're interested in a track bike with TONS of spares, let me know. I have titles for both bikes.
My bike has Galespeed forged wheels, 2 sets of OEM wheels, Penske triple clicker rear shock with LE connecting link, Race Tech forks, woodcraft clip ons, woodcraft rearsets, scotts steering damper, 2 sets of race bodywork, and lots of other goodies.

It was never fair to compare a TLR to an RC51, the TL was 1998 technology, the last revision of the RC51 (SP2) was worlds different. I had them both, it took me $5000 in upgrades to ge the TL to equal the RC on the track in stock form.
I am looking for $5000 for BOTH bikes with all spares.

Ken

i've had 600's, a 750, aTLR an R1, a ducati MS4 and currently a 749 and the bike i loved the most was the TLR. Stable on the track and plenty of grunt for fun times on the street. the killer was the ergo's, it's a long reach to the bars, even with TLS bars installed. I like more of a compact cabin. If i were you i'd make that trade in a NY minute. (depending on the custom fairings, that could be a deal breaker if they look goofy)
