I have watched it on dvd several times. You see hopper 's bike slide the front and he picks it up. You see nicky pull his knee in to avoid hitting him but hoppers line is wide and they hit. You HAVE TO watch the video to see this. The still shots appear that they are already touching, the video is from behind where they are a few feet apart.

Ok, heres another issue. 2 seconds in you see nicky make a mistake and almost pull it in on someone else(Sotoner maybe?) making him go wide. Hopper was coming on strong and initially was on the outside and saw nicky pushing and figured he didn't want to go any wider, so he pulled it in. Had nicky never made that initial screw up, the whole series of events most likely wouldn't of happened.
