Gear ratios? - Sportbike Addicts

I'm thinking of changing my gear ratio's on my 06 R6 to give me a little more on the bottom end, a buddy told me to drop 1 tooth in the front and 2 in the back. What do you guys think? I don't want to go too extreme I still want some top end.

Thats a pretty common set up, especially for the track. Maybe go -1 front first and see how that feels. If you still want more after that, then you can go up with the rear sprocket.

Or did he say drop one in front and add two in back?

There's a bit of a difference...

I don't remember I thought he said lose 2 in the back, but I could be wrong, cuz dropping 2 in the back would give me taller gears, wouldn't it?

Most likely he said 1 down in the front and 2 up in the rear.

if you know your trans gears, primary, frnt sprocket, rear sprocket, tire circumference** I can give you your mph @ rpm...

**the tire circumference should be the rolling cir. there are a few ways to measure this but the easy one is to mark your tire and roll a few revolutions on the street with your weight on the bike. Then you can measure the distance between the two marks left on the street. If you measure around your tire while it's in the air (without any load) you'll end up with a different number.

Yes, for an R6 (or 600's in general) going down 1 on the front and up 2 on the rear is pretty standard.

The R6 doens't make alot of power in the midrange so it'll help get you to the upper RPMs a little faster.

go down 1 in fornt first.. that shoud lbe good .. if you only want to wheelie and top out at 120 than go 2 or 3 up in theback as well.. but if just some more low end 1 down inthe fornt shoudl be good

I'm kinda shocked at alot of the replies.... I don't know the yam's gearing or torque peak but I know for me if I went -1front/+3 rear I would lose 12% on the top mph... so if say the bike topped at 160mph I would be down to 140mph (actual mph not indicated of course). I know the bike would be a whole new beast with gearing that aggressive for the first few rides.
