Windproof gloves, something to put around your neck (which is usually exposed), and a windproof jacket liner would be 3 must haves in weather as cold as it has been recently.
And then just layer yourself with some nice warm clothes, like the cold gear joe mentioned, and thermals.
Also keep in mind that the cold is not the only challenges when riding this time of the year. You may also have to deal with the leaves, and crap (salt/sand/mud) on the road, along with cold tires.
Have fun, and be safe!

Welcome to SBA and the addiction of riding. Take a look at the renj site, get all of your paper work squared away, and when you get your permit find some people on this board to ride with. Learning is a real blast when your on your first bike. As long as you surround yourself with good knowledge and good people you'll have a life time of riding to come.
Also don't be afraid to ask questions. I'm sure theres gonna be some flamers, but use the search button, and if you can't find it, ask away. There is never a dumb question.

Good luck on your test, and please, for the love of your own skin/bones, purchase gear that you will wear ALL year, ie boots, pants, jacket, gloves, helmet.
Like NJF4I said, if you have ANY questions then ask away, many of us have lots of saddle time, no one should EVER flame you, because they know who they are, and they also were in your shoes once.

welcome!
to stay warm, i recommend a heated vest. i think i paid about $120 for mine. plugs into your battery. it's best investment i made to staying warm. i went with a widder vest.
