Has anyone actually been to the area to see how far they are with this?

I sent an email to them two weeks ago and this is their response:
"Hi Robert, thank you very much for your email.
We will be posting updates on our progress.
At the moment a couple of things are moving the through
the NJ legislature that will speed things up for NJMP.
As you mentioned there have been a few other
motorsports projects in the North east that never came to
fruition. We are deliberately staying quiet until the first
shovel of soil is turned over. Once we get under way you
will be hearing a lot more about NJMP and Thunderbolt Raceway.
Best wishes,

Sounds good, but they have not started construction yet. Heavy Sigh.....

I would be shocked if its ready for 07 if they havent broken ground yet. They are building a librabry near me and that took a year and a half so Ican imagine what a facility like a race track will take.

millville, about halfway between AC and Camden.
The library was most likely government funded using the greatest money the lowest bidder process could find... Which means lots of cutting corners, and fighting with the government over contract details and getting more money when they go over budget (because of some not so small details the government tends to leave out of such projects)...
anyhow, I dont expect the track itself to take more than a few months to build and have running, so some dates in 2007 are certainly possible if they actually break ground this year.
most of their obstacles seem to have been environmentalist groups, not the government, which is often the case.. for the most part the local government down there wants to see this happen as they are touting it as a major source of income (taxes) and jobs for an area that needs both.

Unfortunately, that's the talk at the moment.
Although I have yet to hear for certain.
Ginoe - We missed you at BeaveRun this weekend, what happened?

After having heard an unpleasant rumor that this project has been killed,
I sent this e-mail to Mr. Redman:
James - Please say it isn't so! I've heard from a fellow track day rider that
Thunderbolt has been cancelled due to lack of funding as well as local opposition.
I truly hope this is a temporary setback, and not the final word on the project.
Regards,
Robert ReFalo
This is his reply:
"Hi Robert, the start of construction has been delayed until spring 2007.
The first full season will be 2008. Yes there have been a few things delaying us,
however local opposition is not one of them!!
Things are still moving ahead and we will be posting news
on the website once we get started."
Best wishes,
James Redman

That is sort of good news, I was hoping that it would be open in 2007, but another season wouldn't hurt.
Hearing from Dave Gallo that the project was dead in the water was a real bummer this weekend.

Ken - He says that the first FULL season will be '08,
hopefully that turns out to mean that the track itself
will be open for business sometime in '07.
Hopefully...
Maybe...
Could be...
But don't hold your breath.

Yeah, local opposition is relatively minimal concerning this project. From what I have read in the papers, the biggest setback were soem environmentalists complaining about it... Projects like this often have numerous hurdles to overcome before they even break ground. And they dont want to rush into breaking ground before they make sure each and every potential deal breaker is taken care of....
As you can imagine, you wouldnt want to start spending millions on a project only to be stopped half way because of something you overlooked.
