Your cable/dsl modem needs to bind to the router. Power down your router and your modem. Boot those two machines up. The reason your laptop works when directly plugged into the modem is because the modem is bound to your laptop's MAC address. To reset this, you'll need to power down the modem and the router.
You'll need to find out the gateway IP address. This is usually found in the documentation of the router and commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.254. You'll need to enter this gateway address in your laptop network settings or xbox config settings. Your IP settings (by default) on your laptop/xbox should be set to DHCP, which in layman's terms means that the machine will grab an IP address from the router.

You can't swap in/out the device connected directly to the cablemodem without powering the modem down/up...unless you spoof the MAC but we won't get into that.
