Well do some reading about how to ride the terrain you will be in. Big difference in riding in sand, hardpack, mud, water, snow. Having a little knowledge base under your belt will help your learning curve be less painful.... If I were new to dirt I would stay on the hard pack if possible until you get used to the back end sliding out and the differences in dirt braking compared to street. Street riders shit their pants when the ass gets happy on a bike and dirt riders smile and go WFO!

Also do a little reading about how to fall so that you don't break your wrist the first day out on the thing.
