when towing a trailer (total weight including bikes about 1200 lbs.) is it harmful to the transmission to tow with overdrive on.. cause with overdrive on i get about 17-18 mpg, with it off i get about 12.

I thought you were supposed to "not" tow with the OD on. check the vehicles owners manual for towing tips.

it wont make a difference on wear and tear---

it'll just be hell on the tranny to keep switiching gears if you're driving in an more mountainous area.... its just desigened to help keep the revs in the right range... Less down shifting... no biggie.

+1 As long as you are going at a steady speed, like on the expressway, then it won't hurt to leave the OD on. I would turn it off in city traffic though.

With Auto trans vehicles I would use the OD only when on a level roadway. One you get into hilly terrain shut it off.
