Think of it like the nfl joe. Tampa bay had a worse record then the giants but yet they were still ahead of them in the nfc because they took the nfc south. While the giants were second in the nfl east and ended up number 5 in the nfc. First team not leading there division with the best record. So with the nhl the 3 division leaders get the top 3 spots. Then the points figure out the next 5 to make the playoffs.
