Up for sale is a bike that I recently serviced here at my shop. It belongs to a police officer in my area. It is a 2003 883 Sportster, Anniversary Edition. 2003 was the 100 year celebration for Harley Davidson and they commemorated that with a special tank badge.

He brought it to me to service the bike and it received a carb and jet cleaning, oil and primary fluid change, front brake fluid service, sparkplugs and an oil filter as well as a basic technical inspection.

The bike has a Kuruyaken hyper-charger air cleaner assembly and vance and hines drag pipes. It also has a harley-davidson genuine parts back rest, which is removable. It bolts to the rear fender strut. It also has forward controls which are a harley genuine part. These are much better than the standard mid controls. They allow you to stretch out your legs and really enjoy the ride.

Mechanically the bike is great. It runs and shifts great and revs nice and clean from bottom to top. Whether it is a top-gear roll on or just leaving the traffic light the bike pulls strong with no flat spots or rough spots. I probably put a good 10-15 miles on it in the area after I worked on it and it really does run great. Tires are good and the brakes are good as well.

Cosmetically, the bike needs a bit of elbow grease with some real good aluminum polish and cleaner. Some good attention to detail will bring everything back and make it look much better. The owner lived down the shore and the bike stayed covered but it was still exposed to the humidity and salt air. As a result the aluminum that was polished is oxidized and some of the chrome is pitting on the after market air cleaner (the hyper-charger). The wheels also need to be cleaned well. Aluminum wheel cleaner and a pressure washer will bring them back like new or close to it. The rear brake rod from the forward controls is steel and has some small spots of rust on it. This can possibly be scrubbed off or easily sanded and painted or brought to a chrome shop to be plated.

The paint isn't bad but it has nicks and scratches here and there. Nothing too too major with the exception of a dent that is in the tank on the left side. The bike was blown over in a storm and that was the result. That and the speedometer was broken. The owner just decided to take it off, after all, he is a cop so not like he had to worry about getting pulled over. Therefore, mileage is estimated. He told me that the bike was only used during the summer months and that it sat last year and wasn't used at all, only started occasionally. (That was the reason for the carb and jet cleaning) He said at most he maybe did 2K miles a year on it, so that estimates it at 6K. I asked him that and he said that it could even be less than 6K. ( the shore area is only 10 miles from one end to the other) A new speedometer/odometer assembly can be had for 50 bucks or so. There are a few nice genuine harley ones on ebay motors right now. You can even do a dual guage set up with a speedo and a tach if you wanted. And a new tank can be had for 100 bucks or so. Or you can pull the dent out and repaint it with your own choice of color or graphics. After all, its a harley, you have to customize it!

This is a great bike to either build upon or start out on. It is mechanically sound and should provide years of use to come. If you have any questions or would like to see or talk about the bike, please give me a call. And for those that might be looking for a little bit more, you can also do the 1200 big bore kit from harley that ups the displacement from 883 to 1200.

Simple, Yet effective! lol . too bad you can see my car plate in one of the pictures. Little do they know they would be doing me a favor if they stole that thing. The other one you can see his cop cruiser in the background.

It really only makes a difference if it's something that's connected to you. With your plate online, a person could theoretically find out your address and go to collect the items they know you have... I think this is more frequent with car forums and such with kids who have a lot of aftermarket parts in their cars and other people don't want to pay for the stuff. In all honesty, I don't think it's a frequent enough thing to worry about anyway, but it's kind of like shredding documents with your SSN or bank account info on it. The odds of someone digging through your trash is slim, but there are still odds, which is enough to freak people out. Of course, in this scenario, maybe the bike being connected to a cop is enough to deter a person anyway, lol.
