How to obtain a US Passport (http://www.usps.com/passport/)

This is something you don't want to wait to do, time goes by quick and before you know it you'll be scramblin trying to get one.

Upon returning to the US from my Calabogie trip, I spoke to the border officer and she says they won't be mandatory until 2009, the soonest 2008. I asked where to look for this info, she said the US govt customs webpage, thats where they get their info LOL!

I did get my passport ANYWAY!

I have never understood why most people resist the need to apply for and get a US passport. I have friends that simply will travel on a taped up birth certificate until the final days that they are allowed. Just silly.

Passports will be required for international air travel,
but not yet for all ground travel.
I'm going to get mine anyway. Looks like several trips up north this year. :ride:

Not like MVS where they keep it on record. They actually use photos.

Ginoe, just pick your chin up :ride:

I planned a trip to Canada two years ago and before I left I tried to get as much info as possible. I spoke to about 4 different "officials" regarding documentation required to travel back/forth and received different info every time. What I got from that experience was no one has any clue, so the more documentation you bring the better off you are.

good to have a passport. makes travel much easier and can always use it for a form of id. DMV likes when you renew your license and show a passport for id:nod2:

Why not? The Canadian tracks rule. Won't your parole officer let you? :)

A current passport is a good thing to have anyways and they stay valid for a long time (10 years I think).

straight from the US State Department:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

Just an update.

LAND AND SEA TRAVEL

"JANUARY 31, 2008
U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time. "
