Update: Doug Z broke his leg above the knee. I did not witness it but it looked like he slid the rear in the long left before the fish hook at VIR S and it hooked up and highsided him (my opinion on the resting place of Doug and his bike). Doug was sitting up and taking off his gloves and helmet but he was not getting up.
He has already had surgery and will be staying overnight(news from Jeff).

Unfortunately as well, Ralph (RCM78) was hit on the inside while at the apex at the top of the hill going down to the Oak Tree turn. The offending rider took full responsibility but Ralph unfortunately was driven off the track (if you know the turn it drops off pretty quickly). His bike had a slightly bent frame slider and a bent clutch lever along with some dirt and grass. His bike took the least of it. Ralph ended up with the sky/grass/sky view and landed with a broken left collarbone.
Best wishes for speedy recoveries to both!!

I was there the day before and went off in that turn too. I came with too much speed up the straight and wasn't paying attention to my turn in spot and missed my apex by like 5 feet heading right off the track. Im Ok just twisted my pinky and hurt my ego:( But I did have a good day, I cant wait to get back out to the track.

Speedy recovery Ralph and Doug!

Let's go for some easy riding upstate NY when you get back in the saddle. I'll make you my famous omelette. Don't be hard on yourself, too. Time is the best healer - I know firsthand.

We saw Ralph's wreck from our pit. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I was livid and ready to punch the dude in the mouth so I suggested to Foti that someone have a talk with the rider and make damn sure he fully understood just how stupid a move that was. I went back to my pit to calm down, I was ready to puke. Foti later told me that the rider was really sorry and beating himself up over it. Whatever. Still pisses me off to think about it.

he did it again the very next session. no one went down, but he went between Foti and a slower rider and rode the rummble strip. he could have easily takin both of them out including himself.

Ralph, knowing his reputation and inexcusable actions during a track day, could he be not allowed to ride with the club anymore? Not only were you another rider, but staff to boot. This is a general question really...like what would it take for a rider to be black listed from a club? Has it ever happened?

It's really sad to see that 1 asshole f'ed up so many people's trackday. I'm no trackday expert, only been doing them for 6 yrs., but my take on trackdays is that we are all there for the same reason. We are there to hone our riding skills,in a SAFE, fun environment. We are there to have a good time with friends, not see how many people we can piss off or offend. Most of us , well, atleast I have a wife and daughter at home and a job to return to. If some fucktard hits me on the track, causing serious injury to me, who is going to pay my bills, explain to my wife and daughter to make them understand how and why this happened, work my job? If the person in question has a history of this type of behavior, they should not have the right to ride with said organization. Allowing him/her to return would be condoning their behavior. All the clubs I ride with stress smooth and SAFE, not reckless and dangerous. This post in no way insinuates that TPM is a dangerous or reckless club, or condones this behavior.

As for all the fellow trackday riders who have had the unfortunate experience of crashing at VIR, I hope for a fast and full recovery!!

Unfortunately not everybody has this outlook. I am there to ride better, and push myself and the bike further than the street will allow me to do safely. There are some people out there that are very aggresive and actually get upset if they get passed. I don't really care what anybody else around me is doing, as long as they are doing it safely.

just an update on doug...

doug went down during the second session on sunday and he was brought to danville regional hospital. they did some test for concussion which came back negative, and xrays, which obviously came back positive (femur). they wasted no time to get a rod in there and he was done with surgery sometime between 3-4pm same day.

i went to see him sunday and he was on morphine and was in and out the whole visit. he didnt look great, but he was in one piece and knew that he would be ok. if everything worked out fine we were hoping he would get released monday.

on monday's visit a few very small complications (fat clot?, breathing, eating, fever) still existed so they did not release, but were hoping he could be released tuesday. he looked much better and he had stopped taking the morphine.

on tuesday before i left some of the minor issues were still there and they didnt want to release him. the same is true this morning. he probably wont be released before tomorrow.

since surgery there have been several small issues and he is overcoming them one at a time and making progress, although a little slower than we all had hoped. the good news is he is doing well and getting better without new complications arising.

on the accident itself, cbrbob is probably dead on... he spun the rear in the left turn, chopped the throttle and the bike tossed him. the bike was laying on its right side in the middle of the track. my guess based on the relatively good condition of the bike and poor condition of doug's right femur is that the bike landed on his leg, but thats just a guess, nobody we have asked saw what happened.

I'm glad to hear he's ok, that was a scary one. I was the first on the scene but didn't know who he was. He kept saying "my leg's fucked up, my leg's fucked up", I told him to stay down and don't move, then the medics rolled up. I loaded his bike on the crash truck and left.
I'm pretty sure Bob's right on the money. The marks pretty clearly indicate rear slide, throttle chop, launch.

I didnt forget about you either Ralph! Hope you get better soon as well... I remember seeing the ambulances going out for you, mostly because they cut right across the grass to get to you rather than going the long way. Then I saw all the orange and figured it was a coach.

I really don't know the details of the crash, and as far as I know this guy was still riding the rest of the weekend. TPM always stresses safety as #1 and earlier in the day warned about the close passing. This looks like one of those situations and I am concerned if TPM doesnt address this issue, especially with a coach involved in the incident. Perhaps there is something else I am missing, but my take on it is TPM is looking the other way.

This is a bit off topic, and perhaps is something that should (and probably already is) be discussed on the TPM boards...

I'm glad Doug is going to be fine. It would suck to be a victim of "complications"...

As for the offending rider in my crash, I dont think we'll be seeing him around much anymore. In fact he did not ride the rest of the day after our incident. I think southpaw may have him confused with another rider.

FWIW, I heard the same thing from another rider at north on Monday and didn't think anything of it 'till southpaw posted that.
Either way, no matter, it's being dealt with.

UPDATE:

Doug is still in the hospital and probably wont be released until saturday, at the earliest.... his breathing is shallow so he isnt getting enough oxygen so he is getting oxygen supplimented air... his girlfriend is working on getting him on a portable unit so she can at least get him back to NJ.

as far as i know this is the only remaining obstacle thats keeping him at the hospital in VA... it turns out his lungs were bruised from the crash and it seems to be limiting his oxygen absorption.

just a quick question...does he smoke?

After my surgery on my crash It took my gf and my family 3-5 hours to wake me up....cuz i smoked...then after 3 months of not smoking and on my 3rd surgery..i woke up faster...

The nurse said that smokers take a long time to recover..

Thanks for the replies and well wishes guys. I m home, healing and taking it easy.

G/F is like a godsend, taking care of everything for me from the house stuff, to bills, to appts, and bandage changes....I couldn't have asked for more from her.

Ron, its funny....when I was in traction, I thought of You....thinking...this must be the kinda pain Ronco was felling. Morphine made me sick after 1st night though, so I had to deal.

Jeff: Let me just say thanks a million. Jeff went so far above and beyound what a friend does, its just crazy. After me & g/f were taken to hospital, he brought up all our id, cash, wallets, cell phones etc. He also cut his day short to do that..or see us at the end of the day...its fuzzy. BUT, He also pulled my tailer and bikes home for me, kept them with him for a week, then brought them and the trailer down to my place the day I was coming home.

I can't thank you enough bro, and you know if you ever need anything, don't even hesitate for a second to ask. Seriously.
