What's with riders changing their bike's standard oil ever 1,000 miles? Especially synthetic?!

It's your money so if you feel like wasting it go ahead, but there's no need for it on the street. Standard oil can go to 3,000 before it starts to break down, and Synthetic is designed to have less breakdown over time so putting 5,000 or more on it isn't a problem. Just pick up a quality filter like a K&N to take care of the dirty work and have fun riding instead of killing yourself changing the oil every two to three weeks.

Same deal with fuel, using more than the recommended octane is just literally burning your money away on a stock motor, it's performance won't increase at all, but that's already been touched on numerous times.

I change my oil after every track day, just something I do because it makes me feel like I'm doing something, instead of nothing.............. like now.

i do it when the oil light comes on. it's been happening round the 6K mark. should i change sooner than waiting for the light? i should keep better track of what mileage im at when i change oil.

:wtf: is this a trick question? Your oil light is definitly not supposed to be used as an indicator on when you should change your oil.

speaking of Oil changes and stuff, how many miles can a typical 4 stroke motorcycle engine last, if taken care of? 30K, 50K, more?

unfortunately fwe bikes live to see how long their engines will actually last since most engines seem to outlive the bikes (frames) they are in. I would think a properly maintained engine (not just oil changes) would have no problem going 100k+ miles under normal use (no stunting, racing, etc)... At least for the Water cooled I4 4 stroke... Probably even much longer...

But not many of usaverage 10k miles a year, and that would take 10 years to get to 100k... Don't think too many of us here would keep a sportbike that long... I'm sure if you visited the goldwing forums, you'd find plenty of bikes over 100k miles...

I saw this guy at WCW with a 00-01-02 gixxer 1000 with something like 88,000 miles on the clock!
